It’s not always easy to troubleshoot the problems with my furnace.

There is one particular heating and air conditioning company that I use for all of my needs. The guys perform a tune-up on the furnace that includes a lot of different tasks. When I have a problem or issue with my furnace, sometimes a tune-up will resolve the issue. The last time I had an issue, the guy told me that I should call someone to have the tune-up performed before I have an issue. I thought that was very good advice, but I am cheap and I like to save my money. When there was a problem with my furnace last month, I tried to figure out how to fix the issue on my own. I knew that the furnace was experiencing a lot of wear and tear, but it’s usually reliable and efficient and I didn’t think that it was going to break down. I tried a lot of different tasks that usually help the furnace work better. When none of those things seemed to help, I called the furnace repair service. They came to the house the next day and performed one of the furnace tune-up services. During the tune-up, they found that the heat exchanger was cracked. There was no way for me to fix that problem, so it was a good thing that I decided to contact the professional repairman. I found out that I needed to replace the furnace, but I did get a really good deal on a brand new system that is even more energy efficient than the last one.

My boss gave me the schedule for Thursday and Friday on Wednesday before I left the HVAC repair shop.
On Thursday I was going to help with a ductless installation job and on Friday I was scheduled for a commercial repair in the morning and another ductless insulation job in the afternoon.
After I saw the schedule for Friday, I knew exactly why my boss let me go home early on Thursday after finishing up with the first ductless installation job. I was going to be working all day on friday. After the commercial repair, it was going to take at least 6 hours for me to install the ductless heating and cooling system at the residential address. When my girlfriend went into labor a month early, I had to find someone to cover my shift. I called my boss on Friday morning and I told him that my girlfriend was in labor. He told me that it was probably just nothing and that I should come to work. I told my boss that I would come to work if the doctor said there was nothing wrong. I was going to the emergency room with my girlfriend. She wasn’t going to be alone even if it meant that I was going to get fired from my job. On our way to the emergency room, I called a couple of people to see if they could cover my shift. I found one of my buddies that was off on Friday and offered to switch days with him. My girlfriend delivered our baby later that afternoon.

When I had a tune-up on my HVAC system last week, the repairman tried to sell me one of the new smart thermostat systems.
I listened to the guy talk to me about why it was going to be a good idea, but I wasn’t really listening.
After the HVAC repairman left, I decided to use the internet to research the smart thermostat more thoroughly. A smart thermostat requires a Wi-Fi connection. It also requires you to have a telephone with space to download the app. Each smart thermostat has an app that coincides with their particular product. A smart thermostat is a great way to save money on all of your energy bills throughout the month. A smart thermostat provides accurate information and learns patterns of behavior based on information that the thermostat gathers throughout time. A smart thermostat can also be set up to track monthly energy use. I was particularly interested in learning more about that feature, because I thought that my kids were coming home from school and adjusting the temperature on the thermostat. I couldn’t prove it, because the temperature was always back at 74° when I got home from work. If I had the ability to track the usage of the thermostat, then I would be able to catch the kids if they were not telling the truth. My particular make and model also has a coded password that I can set at any time so the kids can’t access the thermostat unless I want them to. I had the repairman come right back to the house the next day to install the system after I learned about all of the great features.

The boss ordered enough breakfast burritos for everyone to fill up their bellies.
There’s a place around the corner where everyone likes to go to get burritos for lunch and breakfast. During the afternoon and lunch hours, the place serves a variety of different burritos with chicken, pork, steak, fish, and beef. During the morning hours, they serve the same burritos and they add eggs. I happen to love getting burritos from the place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Not only are the sizes humongous, but they are reasonably priced at less than $10 each. They have a lunch special that includes a drink and a side of chips and queso and it is still reasonably priced. My boss had everyone get together at the HVAC repair business last Monday for a meeting. Nobody wanted to get up early on Monday to talk about HVAC business, but the boss said that he was going to have something that would be a good surprise. I was one of the first people to arrive and I was there when the guy from the burrito place arrived with all of the breakfast burritos. The boss ordered enough breakfast burritos for everyone to fill up their bellies. While he discussed all of the HVAC business, my coworkers and I filled up on free food. There were still a couple of burritos left after everyone was done eating, so I put one of them in my lunch box. I heated it up in a microwave at the gas station for lunch. It tasted just as good as it did when it came through the door earlier that morning.

With my feet nice and warm and the rest of my body cold from the chilly A/C, I got a brilliant idea.
I do some of my best thinking at the beauty salon. I work in marketing, but make most of my money through investments. I like to sink some capital into small businesses for a percentage of the ownership. This is always a risk, because if the small business fails then I lose my investment money. But when it pays off, I can make a lot of money quickly. Anyway, I got my bright idea while getting my toes painted at the beauty salon. I was relaxing in the chair, with my feet in the warm bath. It was perfect, because I was lucky enough to get the pedicure chair located directly under the air vent. With my feet nice and warm and the rest of my body cold from the chilly A/C, I got a brilliant idea. This was the best chair in the salon because of that air vent… So what if there was an air vent over every chair? That would mean every chair was “the best chair in the salon.” After my toes were painted and dried I walked to the manager’s office and pitched her my idea about the air vents. The manager didn’t have enough money for that, because remodeling the HVAC system and the ductwork would cost several thousand dollars. I told her that I would invest money into the salon and pay for all the HVAC work personally, if I was made a part owner. I am still waiting to hear back from her, but if she passes on it then I will just take my brilliant air vent idea to another salon!

I never got the virus myself, but it still cost me my job.
Without a job I lost my house, and virtually everything I had. I was reduced to living in my car while I searched for a job. Finally I got fired for minimum wage at a local food truck. I would slave away in the tiny food truck kitchen for hours on end, and walk away with very little money. It sucked, but it was better than nothing. Besides, when you live in a car you don’t have to pay rent. My car is a station wagon so it’s very roomy, and both the heater and the air conditioner still work great, so things could be worse. The vehicle I call home has A/C but the vehicle I call the workplace does not. This can be quite trying during a long shift, because I am standing right over a deep fryer, and the air quality is abysmal. Not only is there no cooling, but the food truck is immersed in a cloud of grease and smoke throughout the day. Even with the side panel open to allow for natural ventilation, the food truck remains hot, humid, and gross all day, every day. During my breaks I go to the station wagon, turn on the air conditioner, and sit in front of the air vents until it’s time to get back to work. One day I hope to live in a house again, but for now a car is better than nothing.

She came up with all kinds of business plans and marketing ideas for a salon of her own. She wanted a high-end salon, catering to the fanciest people. After I graduated from school and got a job, I wanted to repay her support and financially back her idea for a salon. As it turns out, my education in heating and cooling systems was a huge help in making the salon a reality. The heating and cooling needs of a salon such as this are precise, exacting, and hard to maintain. Helen knew that having a certified HVAC tech like me who could handle the salon would help her succeed. At first I didn’t understand why, because it was just a beauty salon, right? Wrong! The clients she wanted to serve would demand perfect air quality and temperature control, because that’s what they expected. When they went to a salon for a makeover they wanted to feel like royalty, so perfect temperature control was essential. I installed extra air vents so there would be a directional air flow directly above every workstation. With the addition of zone-controlled air conditioning, every customer could adjust the temps to their liking. This customized HVAC system made Helen’s salon the perfect place for rich people to hang out for hours on end. Because it is so complicated, I have to run a full HVAC system inspection at the salon at least once a month.

People think that I am an optimist who always looks on the bright side of any situation, but the truth is that I’m usually stoned.
It’s much easier to let go of stress when I am high, so I try to stay high as much as possible. A few weeks ago my central HVAC stopped working, which should have been very upsetting. Instead of getting worked up I got stoned, and tried to see things from a different perspective. This was the only time of the year when the temps were nice, so it was the best possible time for the HVAC system to break. In another month or so the heat and humidity will pick up, and then the lack of proper cooling will be a major issue. For the time being, I really don’t need to run the A/C so why should I worry about it? I am trying to make the best of the situation, so I opened up all the windows for natural ventilation. The major problem with relying on A/C too much is that the recycled air can become stagnant and dank. Natural ventilation clears everything out, and gives the place a fresh, clean scent… aside from all the pot smoke, of course. Eventually I will need a professional to come over and evaluate my HVAC system to see what is wrong with it, and if I can afford to fix it. I hope it’s something small because I will need AC when summer arrives.

Jones has been my handyman for the last few years.
- He is retired, and likes doing handyman work to keep himself busy.
Jones is not fast, but he is skilled, and knows how to fix things. It turns out there are some jobs that Jones can’t handle. Maybe he is getting too old. It’s sad, because now I’m going to have to find someone else I can rely on. Recently I had a problem with the ceiling in my dining room. It was starting to sag along one edge, and I was fearful the ceiling might collapse on top of me during dinner. Jones took one look in the attic and told me I needed to call an HVAC professional. This was weird, because Jones had worked on my heating and cooling system many times over the years. He was not HVAC certified but knew his way around a furnace. Jones explained to me that he was smart enough to know his own limitations, and while he could fix some issues with an air conditioner, other things were too advanced for him. This is why he preferred working with older model natural gas furnaces and the like, because that was the technology of his generation. The last A/C issue I had was something he had no idea how to fix, so he was honest about that. At least Jones was able to recommend a reliable HVAC contractor for me to call. This company won’t be as cheap as Jones is, but I know I’ll get the best possible price.
