For the HVAC in my house, I turned to the HVAC professionals. And that’s when I got the surprise. The HVAC supplier came out to do an inspection plus that resulted in the aforementioned surprise. It turns out that not only was the heat pump shot, the HVAC duct was also unUSble. This immediately blew up my renovation budget. But thankfully, the HVAC professional had a ready solution. And that came in the form of a series of ductless heat pumps which now give some of the best quality heating plus air that I’ve ever experienced.

I realize that this is sort of stereocorrect behavior in some sense! So many retirees from the north end up down here. But I now understand the appeal of trading a gas gas furnace for a heat pump plus a attractive winter. With the large mantle and hearth, it’s a beautiful focal point. Since we live in an area with especially long and harsh winters, heating is essential. My husband and I were both excited by the opportunity to cut wood, build a fire and enjoy a free source of heat. Plus, I looked forward to the ambience. I imagined us spending a cold winter night sitting in front of the fireplace sipping a glass of wine. We’ve lived in the house nearly five years and have built one fire. It was a tremendous amount of work and created a huge mess. First we needed to cut down trees and create logs of a suitable size. The wood was wet and couldn’t be burned until it dried out. The logs were heavy and difficult to carry and hauling them through the house left a trail of dirt. We struggled to get the fire started and then dealt with smoke, fumes and ash. Our whole house smelled like a campfire. The heat was contained right near the fireplace. Afterward, it was necessary to hire a company to clean the flu. Since then, the fireplace has been entirely ornamental. I recently got the idea to have it converted into a natural gas heater. Our house is already equipped with natural gas that runs the furnace, stove, clothes dryer and water heater. From what I’ve read, it would not be that difficult, invasive or expensive to install and insert into the fireplace. It would still have the look of a real fire but with none of the disadvantages. We could start up the fireplace with the tap of a button on a remote. The fireplace insert would include a thermostat and fan, allowing us to set the ideal temperature and distribute the heat throughout the room.

The extremely long and cold winters in my area necessitate running the furnace for six to eight months.

The wind chill is downright brutal. Because cold air retains less moisture than warm air, we end up with problems with humidity. Plus, the blast of heat from the furnace further dries out the living environment. It causes health concerns such as itchy eyes, sneezing, coughing, headaches, sore throat and an increased risk of sinus infection. Along with chapped lips, frizzy hair and static shock, insufficient humidity aggravates allergies, asthma, eczema and psoriasis. There’s the possibility of hardwood floors and furnishings drying out and cracking. Since the overly dry air feels colder, we tend to raise the thermostat setting. The furnace then needs to work hard and run more often. It experiences greater wear and tear, uses more energy and leads to higher energy bills. I tried portable humidifiers, but they were too much work for very little benefit. I constantly needed to clean and refill the reservoir. I noticed a strange smell in the air. I finally invested into a whole-house humidifier that incorporated right into the furnace. I chose a steam-style humidifier that uses electrodes to change water to steam. The steam is introduced into the warm air before it gets circulated throughout the house. Since adding the humidifier, I’ve been able to lower the thermostat by a couple of degrees and yet the living space feels warmer and more comfortable. The humidifier wasn’t overly expensive and is paying for itself by way of lower heating bills. The operation is nearly silent and the device requires only annual maintenance.

Today is the first day of 2023 and I am going to attempt to stop drinking beer each day and cut back on the sugar.
- I normally don’t eat any sugar, but being back here in the States over the holidays is proving to be tough on my healthy diet plans.
I guess I don’t have a lot of willpower when sugar is all around me, but when I go home it is a lot easier because I have no sugar or sweets in my flat. I just need my flatmate to be on the same page as me too. Residential heating and cooling repairs is my job over there and I also work on climate control systems in commercial buildings. I just want to try and be as healthy as possible so that I can live a long time and have a good body to help me get there. Working on big heat pumps and hot water heaters all day can be tough on the lower back and shoulders, and doing yoga each day helps a lot with keeping them strong and healthy. I am going to go for a run today and do a little leg workout, then after that I will try and meet up with a friend somewhere for lunch maybe. Today may be a bit difficult though because lots of local businesses are closed and most of my HVAC tech friends are busy with their families and stuff. I may be stuck here at my aunt’s house because I have no car to get me around town while visiting here.

I had a good night of sleep thanks to the comfort of my aunt’s house. I am staying here for another week and then I head back to my life on the Spanish coast. It will be tough saying bye to my mom because I may not be back for another year this time. It could be the last time I see her and my stepdad together as they are both getting older and you never know. But I have to live my life over there because it has become just too expensive to live here in the States. HVAC system sales and repair is my work over there and I only have to work about 15 hours a week to live comfortably in a nice quiet beach town. There is no way I could survive here on those hours and if I moved back here I would spend most of my time driving around chasing money. I don’t mind working for the heating and cooling supplier part time, but driving to work at a local business and spending all day there to survive is not my idea of a fun time. I guess it will all work out how it is supposed to work out and me worrying or thinking about it doesn’t really help the situation at all. I’ll just keep on doing my air conditioning maintenance job for the local contractor in my town overseas and try to keep saving money so that I can rent a car next time I come back to visit my family.

All of us aren’t yet even to January and I’m already thinking about how to rein in the costs of cooling system. Mid January is the depth of Winter for our neighbors to the north. But for us, it’s the best time of the year. I wish every one of us could keep the weather and the hot and cold temperatures like this all year, for sure, it’s nice to not have the heat pump running night and day. So I spend this time of year going over every inch of the exterior of our home to seal up any cracks or gaps. I also inspect all the weather stripping as the sunlight can damage that pretty easily down here, then replacing the weather stripping is another important area of sealing up a house. I have also already tied up the cooling system tune up because having a well maintained heat pump is key to getting maximum efficiency. And this year, we are adding some new solar shades on a single side of the home in order to completely mitigate direct sunlight heating.

When you’ve lived inside rented housing all your life, there comes a big shift when you become a first time homeowner.
Suddenly, you’re not calling the superintendent of the building or the rental company to come repair the heating plus cooling or whatever.
And all the upkeep plus repair of a lake house is on you as well. There was a big learning curve for myself and others when I first obtained this house. And I guess I was a bit surprised by it. That has to do with the fact that I was just so eager plus excited to leave lake house life behind. I never lived in an lake house that had really fantastic residential HVAC. Also, I was ready to shed the noisy neighbors plus all that stuff as well. To be able to pay a mortgage plus build some equity was what I was all about. And I think that I simply didn’t fully get the fact that owning a lake house comes with plenty of tasks. So initially, I wasn’t unquestionably fantastic with several of the responsibilities that come with homeownership. A big 1 was the HVAC duties. I was leaving dirty air filters for weeks at a time which is not fantastic for the HVAC equipment.
