My husband and I strive to be as environmentally conscientious as possible. For the majority of our commutes, we walk, ride our bikes and take public transportation. We grow many of our own fruits and vegetables, compost organic kitchen waste and make use of rainwater for irrigation. Our home is outfitted with a geothermal heat pump, which is considered the most environmentally friendly heating and cooling system by the Environmental Protection Agency. Just recently, we implemented a smart home automation system. This upgrade contributes to significant energy savings. The automated operation of important systems and appliances is also wonderfully convenient, reducing time and effort. The automation system caters to our daily schedule and preferences as well as the changing demands of the weather. Incorporating a smart thermostat and occupancy sensors, the system adjusts temperature to ensure comfort while also minimizing energy consumption. It knows when the home is empty and when specific rooms are occupied. With zone control, the heat pump provides heating or cooling for comfort in only those areas that are in use. We have also invested into smart blinds. During the winter, the automation system opens up the blinds in the morning to allow in sunlight. The warmth helps to reduce heating demands. In the summer, the blinds are kept closed to prevent sunlight from adding to the workload of the air conditioner. Our lights are also managed by the automation system. They automatically turn on when we enter a room and turn off when we leave. All of these operations contribute to a reduced carbon footprint and also save a great deal of money on our monthly utility bills.

Each month, my savings account gets a little lower when the stupid Energy bill shows up. Frankly, I’ve been convinced that the heating system is our biggest thorn in our side. I think that the forced air furnace is extremely inefficient as well as dirty to operate. I’ve been trying to push for radiant heated floors, but my husband never wants to make the HVAC investment. Finally, I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands and force the heating issue. I went out and adopted a dog with severe allergies. When I showed him to my animal loving husband and told him that he required advanced air temperature and air quality control, his heart melted. This poor dog needed clean indoor air or he would never stop sneezing. We had brand new radiant heated floors within a week.

How many times have you heard that? Now, how many times have you heard that in regards to an indoor heating, cooling, and ventilation plan? Probably not all that often.
Unfortunately, this is something that I’ve had to deal with in the past several months. For as long as I’ve been at my job, everyone there has been pretending that the heating and cooling system was working just fine. Despite the fact that every day when we come into the production facility, the indoor air temperature will either be excruciatingly hot or insanely cold, they try to tell me that this is how commercial HVAC systems work. It’s always been clear to me that the HVAC system was not operating properly and we needed to consider having a true air temperature control specialist come into inspect our failing air quality devices. However, I could never get the upper managers to agree with my simple ventilation service plan. Since no one would ever listen to me, I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I truly appreciate the fall season. Even on the more difficult, rainy, and chilly days I am in heaven.You see, when I wake up and see that the outdoor environment is cold and dreary, it gives me permission to feel similarly. Rather than trying to be warm and sunshiny, I can easily hide out inside and enjoy the dark moodiness of the outdoor climate. To me, cold and stormy days signal an incredibly productive day indoors. Rather than running around outside and doing errands, I’m going to stay inside with my central heating system and enjoy the beautiful warmth of modern indoor air temperature control. I like to use my cold and rainy days as big work day is. I can sit down on a computer and hammer out hours of work for my job, all the while appreciating the streaming heat to that comes pouring out of the air vent onto my feet. I can wrap up in a blanket and set a space heater next to me if I’m feeling even cozier. It’s easy to sit down and concentrate fully on my work when there’s no distraction from singing birds or streaming sunshine outside. Seeing the dark, cold climate reinforces that I have nothing better to do than stay inside in the safety of my indoor heating and cooling system. As long as I’m being productive, I don’t even feel bad about cranking the heat up to 80 degrees all day long.

We’re supposed to be settling in and enjoying at the mystical feeling of the holiday season, but instead there’s way too much to worry about. I can’t ever get my head out of my butt to enjoy the holiday spirit or sense of world peace that were supposed to appreciate. Instead, I’m too busy running from store to store trying to complete errands before my family comes into town and complicates my life even further. Yes, unfortunately I am the one who has to host Thanksgiving. That means I have an awful lot to do, inside and outside of the house. One of the things that I used to forget but would never overlook again is to professionally service the heating and cooling system. After I spend days and weeks cleaning the entire house and purchasing of beautiful Thanksgiving decorations, you better believe that I’m going to make sure the indoor environment is perfect. This includes my indoor air quality and the cleanliness of the air we breathe. I don’t want dirty air ducts spreading more dust all over the house after I cleaned and detailed it. I don’t want to worry about hair or debris floating on to my beautiful Thanksgiving dinner before we have a chance to eat it. I also don’t want to risk a complete heating failure or the possibility of my cranky old grandma complaining about uneven indoor air temperatures. If I can’t have beautiful, evenly heated indoor spaces for Thanksgiving, I might as well cancel the entire family holiday.

I’m not exactly sure what is going on with my living situation right now, but I can tell you that it’s extremely uncomfortable. My roommates are being a bit strange and that means that the indoor air temperature is extremely uncomfortable as well. I started noticing about a week ago that the indoor temperature was extremely cold. It seemed like the thermostat wasn’t working or we were having some kind of heating failure. I didn’t want to seem pushy, so I didn’t say anything to my roommates about the unpleasant indoor air quality at first. I silently dealt with the uneven hot and cold temperatures inside the house, and bundled up in as many sweatshirts as I could. However, eventually I did ask them what was going on with the heating system. It’s nonchalantly responded that the pilot light has gone out and they’re waiting for the landlord to come fix it. I didn’t want to pressure them, so I didn’t tell them that that was a bit ridiculous. I’m not sure why they didn’t want to just relight the pilot themselves. However, I can tell you that I can’t continue to wait for the landlord to show up for this basic heating service. I’ve been freezing my butt off for way too long now. I don’t know how I can continue living in there, especially as the outdoor air temperature continues to drop next week. Instead, I’ve been slowly moving my things over to my boyfriend’s house and sleeping warmly in his working heat. I know that this plan can’t work forever, but until the furnace is running effectively again, I will be crashing here.

It wasn’t always easy, but we were fairly creative and ready to get into trouble at any time. One year, this is what inspired our prank war that raged on for the remainder of high school. It was one of the most fun experiences of my adolescence and possibly my entire life. Honestly, I still look back fondly on one particular prank and pat myself on the back for my ingenuity. Back in the day, we got into a car prank war and took turns putting funny things on each other’s vehicles in the middle of the night. One vehicle got post it noted, and the next week our opponents vehicle was wrapped in saran wrap. We were getting more and more creative, when I came up with the best plan of them all. Instead of keeping my decorations outside, we could utilize the indoor air temperature control equipment to spread some decor inside. I was going to leverage the car heating and cooling system for my own prank. I broke into my friend’s car one night and opened up all the air vents. I tipped the air vents backwards so that I could easily dump fine glitter down into the plastic air ducts.
