It’s not always straight-forward to troubleshoot the troubles with our furnace.
Sometimes I have to contact a local furnace service supplier to help. There is one particular heating and A/C supplier that I use for all of our needs. The guys perform a tune-up on the furnace that includes a lot of different tasks. When I have a problem or issue with our furnace, occasionally a tune-up will resolve the issue. The last time I had an issue, the girl told me that I should call someone to have the tune-up performed before I have an issue. I thought that was unquestionably nice advice, I am cheap and I like to save our money. When there was a problem with our furnace last month, I tried to figure out how to fix the issue on our own. I knew that the furnace was experiencing a lot of wear and tear, but it’s usually reliable and efficient and I did not know that it was going to chop down. I tried a lot of different tasks that usually help the furnace work better. When none of those things seemed to help, I called the oil furnace service service. They came to the house the next day and performed one of the furnace tune-up services. During the tune-up, they found that the heat exchanger was cracked. There was no way for me to fix that problem, so it was a good thing that I decided to contact the professional repairman. I found out that I needed to update the furnace, but I did get a legitimately nice deal on a brand new method that is even more energy efficient than the last one .

It was Christmas Eve, and as was our tradition my whole family was gathered in the living room to watch movies and eat snacks. My wife made caramel popcorn, my daughter baked cookies, and I kept myself busy giving refills of egg nog. It was a freezing cold night outside, but toasty and warm in our humble home. We were in the middle of Home Alone, one of our holiday favorites, when the power went out. I checked outside, and saw that every house on the block was dark. We lost our power, which meant we also lost our heating. We have a very nice central heating system, but what good is an electric furnace when there is no electricity? Almost instantly the house started cooling off, and I knew it could get dangerous cold before much longer.. Thinking quickly I told my wife and kids to clean all the junk away from the brick fireplace, and I took an ax outside to chop some firewood. Instead of letting the lack of heating ruin our Christmas, I was going to build a roaring fire and make it feel special. You can’t deny there is something very homey and romantic about a brick fireplace. The kids wound up having a great time, and they made smores over the flames of the fireplace. The next morning the power was still out, so I made another fire in the fireplace so we could stay warm while opening presents. I was tired of chopping wood, so all I wanted for Christmas was a working furnace.

A few years ago I decided to convert my Florida Room into an art studio.
If you aren’t aware what a Florida Room is, basically it’s an exterior room such as a patio, that is completely screened in. This keeps out the bugs, but still allows for wind as natural ventilation. I took down all of the screens and put in windows and walls. I laid down some heavy carpet over the cement patio floor, and before long it looked like a real studio. Of course, this area was not connected to the central HVAC system of the house. Since it only had screens before there was no reason for heating or cooling it. Now that the space was an art studio I needed climate control, not just for my own comfort but for the sake of the art. Excessive humidity needed to be eliminated, and the indoor air quality improved, or none of the paints or canvases would stay in good condition. As I mentioned, the ductwork system from the main house was not connected to the studio, and I did not feel it was worth the money to buy an additional HVAC system for just one room. Instead I bought a small, portable cooling unit that combined a fan, an air conditioner, and a dehumidifier. There is not very much cold weather in this part of the country, but I also got a cheap little space heater to use in the winter. The cooling unit will get the most use, and I hope it is able to keep the indoor air quality at a high level.

I had Ed install a directional air vent over every single workstation, so that every client could have the AC set to their liking
A good marriage is a strong partnership, and that is what I have with Ed. When we got married we didn’t want to just exist, we wanted to grow and live out all of our dreams. The first part of the plan was for me to work full time while Ed went to school and earned his HVAC certification. Once he had that, he started working full-time as well, and we saved up the money we needed for me to open my own salon. I have been doing hair, nails, and makeup even since I was 16, and I am damn good at it. Ed always wanted to be an HVAC tech like his dad, but there was another reason for his career choice. HVAC techs make excellent money and have tremendous job security, which we need for a source of stability in our lives. I also had some very detailed plans for the HVAC system in my new salon, and I would need an experienced tech to handle it. The problem with most salons is that they have one thermostat to manage the entire place. I knew from experience that if clients could have zone-controlled HVAC set to their preference, it would make the whole salon seem more upscale. I had Ed install a directional air vent over every single workstation, so that every client could have the AC set to their liking. Once the salon takes off, and Ed gets a promotion from the HVAC contractor, we will be able to save a lot of money. One day we want to retire early and move to the beach.

For the first two years I have lived in this house, it has been easy-going.
I have experienced no major issues, besides the old cracked septic tank but I knew about that when I moved in.
Otherwise there have been no major issues with the home. Until last month, when everything seemed to hit the fan all at once. I noticed several small cracks in the ceiling, and wasn’t sure what caused them. The appliances in the kitchen started performing poorly, and they needed to be replaced. After that it was the central HVAC system that went on the fritz. I needed to call a local heating and cooling contractor to inspect my system and give me a price estimate, and that’s when things got much worse.First the technician examined my outdoor HVAC equipment, like the air handler. He checked the thermostat, and looked at all of the air vents as well. Then he needed to look at the indoor air handler, which required him to bring in a ladder and climb up into the attic. Several seconds later there was a loud crash, and that poor HVAC tech came through the broken ceiling and landed flat on his back. I had to call an ambulance, and the HVAC tech was taken away on a gurney to the ER. I really don’t know what to expect, because there is a chance the HVAC tech is going to sue me for his medical costs. Hopefully the contractor will handle everything, but for the time being I have more to worry about than just my air conditioner.

I love fried food, and I love to make it myself at home, but I hate the smell it leaves behind.
A few years ago my sister got me an amazing gift – a personal deep-dryer.
It holds one gallon of oil, and has baskets that I can lower into the oil. Basically it’s a miniature version of the huge deep fryers they use in restaurants. I can make deep fried chicken or shrimp, crab rangoon, or deep fry an entire burrito. I have an entire cookbook of recipes just for the fryer, and I am trying to make them all! As I said, there is a problem with the indoor air quality. Cooking food in bubbling, boiling hot grease and oil leaves a foul impression on the indoor air quality, one that permeates the house for days afterward! Opening up the windows for natural ventilation is one way to fight this, but it has been so hot and humid lately it seems like too much trouble to leave the windows open. I talked to my regular HVAC tech about installing some new ventilation equipment in the kitchen, possibly a range hood or exhaust fan. Even if I don’t cook greasy foods very often, better ventilation in the kitchen is something I have needed for a long time. Most ovens come with a range hood to pull the foul odors up through the ductwork and out of the house, but mine doesn’t have one. The price estimate wasn’t too expensive, so I plan to have the HVAC tech come back next week and improve the ventilation in the kitchen.

Jones has been my handyman for the last few years.
- He is retired, and likes doing handyman work to keep himself busy.
Jones is not fast, but he is skilled, and knows how to fix things. It turns out there are some jobs that Jones can’t handle. Maybe he is getting too old. It’s sad, because now I’m going to have to find someone else I can rely on. Recently I had a problem with the ceiling in my dining room. It was starting to sag along one edge, and I was fearful the ceiling might collapse on top of me during dinner. Jones took one look in the attic and told me I needed to call an HVAC professional. This was weird, because Jones had worked on my heating and cooling system many times over the years. He was not HVAC certified but knew his way around a furnace. Jones explained to me that he was smart enough to know his own limitations, and while he could fix some issues with an air conditioner, other things were too advanced for him. This is why he preferred working with older model natural gas furnaces and the like, because that was the technology of his generation. The last A/C issue I had was something he had no idea how to fix, so he was honest about that. At least Jones was able to recommend a reliable HVAC contractor for me to call. This company won’t be as cheap as Jones is, but I know I’ll get the best possible price.

Smoking pot helps me keep a calm mindset, no matter what happens around me.
People think that I am an optimist who always looks on the bright side of any situation, but the truth is that I’m usually stoned.
It’s much easier to let go of stress when I am high, so I try to stay high as much as possible. A few weeks ago my central HVAC stopped working, which should have been very upsetting. Instead of getting worked up I got stoned, and tried to see things from a different perspective. This was the only time of the year when the temps were nice, so it was the best possible time for the HVAC system to break. In another month or so the heat and humidity will pick up, and then the lack of proper cooling will be a major issue. For the time being, I really don’t need to run the A/C so why should I worry about it? I am trying to make the best of the situation, so I opened up all the windows for natural ventilation. The major problem with relying on A/C too much is that the recycled air can become stagnant and dank. Natural ventilation clears everything out, and gives the place a fresh, clean scent… aside from all the pot smoke, of course. Eventually I will need a professional to come over and evaluate my HVAC system to see what is wrong with it, and if I can afford to fix it. I hope it’s something small because I will need AC when summer arrives.

While I was going to school, my wife Helen supported me by working at a local salon. She developed a great reputation for doing hair, nails, and makeup. She came up with all kinds of business plans and marketing ideas for a salon of her own. She wanted a high-end salon, catering to the fanciest people. After I graduated from school and got a job, I wanted to repay her support and financially back her idea for a salon. As it turns out, my education in heating and cooling systems was a huge help in making the salon a reality. The heating and cooling needs of a salon such as this are precise, exacting, and hard to maintain. Helen knew that having a certified HVAC tech like me who could handle the salon would help her succeed. At first I didn’t understand why, because it was just a beauty salon, right? Wrong! The clients she wanted to serve would demand perfect air quality and temperature control, because that’s what they expected. When they went to a salon for a makeover they wanted to feel like royalty, so perfect temperature control was essential. I installed extra air vents so there would be a directional air flow directly above every workstation. With the addition of zone-controlled air conditioning, every customer could adjust the temps to their liking. This customized HVAC system made Helen’s salon the perfect place for rich people to hang out for hours on end. Because it is so complicated, I have to run a full HVAC system inspection at the salon at least once a month.

With my feet nice and warm and the rest of my body cold from the chilly A/C, I got a brilliant idea.
I do some of my best thinking at the beauty salon. I work in marketing, but make most of my money through investments. I like to sink some capital into small businesses for a percentage of the ownership. This is always a risk, because if the small business fails then I lose my investment money. But when it pays off, I can make a lot of money quickly. Anyway, I got my bright idea while getting my toes painted at the beauty salon. I was relaxing in the chair, with my feet in the warm bath. It was perfect, because I was lucky enough to get the pedicure chair located directly under the air vent. With my feet nice and warm and the rest of my body cold from the chilly A/C, I got a brilliant idea. This was the best chair in the salon because of that air vent… So what if there was an air vent over every chair? That would mean every chair was “the best chair in the salon.” After my toes were painted and dried I walked to the manager’s office and pitched her my idea about the air vents. The manager didn’t have enough money for that, because remodeling the HVAC system and the ductwork would cost several thousand dollars. I told her that I would invest money into the salon and pay for all the HVAC work personally, if I was made a part owner. I am still waiting to hear back from her, but if she passes on it then I will just take my brilliant air vent idea to another salon!
