A typical day in the life of an HVAC serviceman involves receiving service requests from homeowners and following up with them either in the customer’s home or by phone. It had been snowing so much, and everywhere was wet. We got a call from a customer requesting that we check on his stalled heating device. We got into our gear and headed to the residence. It was a big beautiful house in uptown. The heating equipment was an electric heater that had stopped working, thus frustrating the customer. Though he was not there when we arrived, his wife explained the deteriorated indoor comfort due to the broken electric heat pump. The heater maintenance revealed the issue as a leaking vent escaping the hot air, making the unit inefficient. We sent for new parts from the HVAC supplier, including more HEPA filters to increase airflow and the heater’s optimal function. As we fixed the unit, we heard a car drive up the driveway and assumed our customer had come home. It is customary to advise our customers about the importance of heater maintenance after we finish fixing or fitting any system, including the electric heating system. All the HVAC professionals in the heating business go through proper training to communicate with the customer using layman’s language. We also checked the wireless thermostat and changed the batteries. As I advised the customer about the tune-ups, I recognized his voice as that of my favorite radio presenter. I could not stop asking if it was him, to which he confirmed my suspicion.
