Good thing garage has HVAC – flooding

Mother Nature sure is always throwing curveballs my way.

  • If it’s not one thing, it’s another.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been stranded in nasty blizzards, driven through torrential downpours, or lost power because of some unexpected turn of events. I shouldn’t even be surprised anymore when Mother Nature put me through the wringer. Recently, however, I was completely taken aback when a massive thunderstorm blew through the area and dumped two feet of water on us within 24 hours. There was nowhere for the water to go, so it backed up and flooded nearly the entire city. One of the places that it found respite was my garage. I walked out one morning to find the entire garage flooded, dank, and humid. this was a major issue because I was storing a lot of important belongings in my garage. Immediately, I got out the dehumidifier and plugged it in. I spent the next several hours mopping water up off the floor. I had several large utility fans that I plugged in and started blowing air around to the garage. I hoped that this air movement would help to evaporate some of the extra water. My saving grace in this whole situation was the presence of air vents in my garage. When the garage was built, the contractor wisely connected it to the central heating and cooling system. This meant I could pump cool, dry air conditioned air into the garage. By funneling out the hot and humid air and channeling as much cool air into the garage as possible, I saved myself tons of time and money dealing with my flood damaged items.
