A personal journey in the HVAC business

When I graduated from tech school, I looked for a job for almost a year.

  • Just when I started losing hope of getting a job, I got a return call from one of the most talked-about cooling corporations asking me back for a final interview.

I could not hold my excitement. I called every one of my family members, and we all celebrated later that day. Dad had gifted me this thermostat-looking keyholder to encourage me to follow my dreams. On the first day on the job, I met my colleagues, who were great HVAC contractors with excellent skills in all cooling units. These cooling specialists had worked on some of the most complicated systems in the industry. I was to shadow my senior cooling technician for a few months as I got to learn more about the units and especially cooling equipment. I would accompany my boss to HVAC installations and other quality AC services. Initially, it was challenging to keep up with all the innovations and cooling technology, but it came naturally after interacting with numerous electric heat pumps. I eventually got the hang of it. After the shadowing, I was assigned to work at one of the HVAC business stores around the country. I got to interact with many customers and learned how to handle all sorts of customers through it. Most customers came searching for suitable climate control systems to help with indoor comfort at their homes, schools, or offices. I worked as a local service provider for three years and loved it.

Violent storm leaves behind a trail of maintenance cost for local service providers

I do not particularly appreciate moving, but the constant rise in living costs pushed me to leave my lovely western state for the Midwest.

It took me a while to make that decision, and you’d think that I spent time carefully selecting my next home.

Nope! I was randomly picking and dropping states based on my gut feeling and how best I’d fit in with the community. I am hardly a traveler, and I also keep very few friends, so getting information was quite a challenge except for some random Youtube channels. Not thinking much about the weather patterns, I set off with my belongings and set up everything in a week. I should have been wise enough to prioritize checking climate control, talk to the landlord about quality AC service, or at least consult a cooling specialist but no. Excitement got over me big time. The rainy storm season caught me off-guard. Despite being a resident and hearing about potentially destructive storms, I wasn’t prepared for the aftermath. All through the period, my cooling needs were met without a hitch. Interestingly, during the stormy weather, cooling corporations and even freelance cooling technicians and HVAC contractors kept informing residents of the need to monitor all heat-based and cooling equipment to ensure everything worked smoothly because in-person help with indoor comfort wouldn’t be possible at times due to the bad weather. Several weeks later, I got to understand what they actually meant. A thorough inspection of my equipment by a local service provider who has been in the HVAC business for decades revealed clogged drains all over the street, resulting in malfunctioning equipment and causing energy waste. A number of residents needed new HVAC installation, but at least some landed some new cooling technology with the change. I am glad I only had to deal with a malfunctioning electric heat pump.

Bill, bills, bills and more bills while trying to figure out how my cooling works

When living with my parents, I didn’t have any financial responsibility related to the cost of living at home.

  • My mom, being the caring, loving mom she is, convinced my dad that I needed to save money to get my one place eventually.

Once out of college, I had a grace period of 3 years to get a job and 2 more years to save and organize myself. Luckily, things fell into place, and I recently moved out. My parents helped meet the actual cost of moving and setting me up. I basically moved house like I was moving into a furnished apartment. Three months down the line, now I really realize the true cost of being an independent adult. What stands out for me is the climate control of my house. I can’t wrap my head around how cooling works or if I have the right cooling equipment in my house. Whenever I budget for my bills, my energy bills keep rising. So I figured I needed help with indoor comfort and talked to my dad about it. His first suspect was the electric heat pump. Personally, I had no idea what he was talking about, but he hooked me up with his cooling technician, who took me through all the jargon associated with HVAC installation. Apparently, quality AC service is not cheap, but it can get worse with the wrong or old cooling technology, like in my case. Since the cooling specialist took me through how it all works and helped me determine the recommended seer ratios for my area, I took time to learn about the HVAC business, then engaged my landlord with the facts. To be sure of himself, he ignored his local service provider and booked an HVAC contractor from a recognized cooling corporation to look into my claims. It turns out I was right.

Who is the local plumber?

I grew up in a small town up north.

Everybody knew each other and it was easy to find someone to hire.

I then moved down south to a smaller, rural community. It is the same vibe except I don’t know anyone. That means I don’t know who to hire for certain jobs. I have looked around, asked at the hardware store, consulting online services and even used facebook to find workers. I have been successful with finding a local HVAC dealer to do my work. The electrician I hired was old and not very good though. I have yet to find a plumber too. Right now when I need plumbing work done, I use a big time plumbing company that is in the next town over. The technician needs to drive around 40 minutes in order to get to me. I think I am paying for that drive time. The plumbing business does fantastic work, but it is quite expensive. I would really like to find a local guy and get the work done cheaper. Additionally, I really like supporting local businesses and technicians. I would rather keep the money in our small community. So far I can’t locate the guy that does plumbing work. I don’t want any average Joe either. With plumbing you don’t want to mess around. If there is a leak or a crack, I could be in big trouble. Plumbing fixtures are expensive, I don’t want them installed improperly. A water heater should last me around 20 years. Improperly installed and it won’t even last half that time.

Running has become my favorite workout

My favorite workout is to go running.

I cherish the simplicity of it. I don’t need any specialized gear or machines, plus I can go running just about anywhere. Whether I am at home or on trip, I can usually find an ideal route. A nice pair of running shoes plus athletic clothing that suits the weather is adequate. I make sure to warm up my muscles properly before starting out plus thoroughly cool down after I’ve completed the run. I remain conscientious about drinking plenty of water. I have cordless headphones that allow me to listen to my choice of great music. Because running is such a repetitive motion, I don’t need to think about what I’m doing. This is absolutely odd from jumping rope or lifting weights. It’s a great occasion to clear my mind plus get rid of stress, however running is one of the most effective ways to burn a ton of calories in a short amount of time. I can absolutely add to the intensity of the workout by running a little faster, longer or introducing hills into the route. I’ve found that I can suddenly quicken my pace plus stamina by running many times per week. I have mapped out a wide assortment of routes in my local area. I have one that is a quick plus easy 3.5 miles that takes me right down Main Street. I cherish checking out the several boutiques, eating establishments plus a Tim Hortons Latte shop. I have another route that is approximately ten miles plus includes several steep hills. While this run is more strenuous, I typically feel great afterward. I would care about to run for my workout every day. Alas, that would be way too hard on my hips, knees, ankles plus feet. It’s necessary to supply my body a rest from the hard impact. I make an effort to swim, cycle or weight-train in-between.

Gym

There is no heating or cooling in the workout space

I am blessed to have private a lanai constructed across the back of my home that is ideal for my workout space.

The floor is cement, the ceiling eight feet high plus the dimensions are plenty crucial for my physical needs.

The one exterior wall is built almost absolutely of screens, which provides steady and reliable ventilation. For most of the year, the weather in the local section is moderate. I cherish access to fresh breezes. I have an appealing view of the gardens plus lake at the back of the property. I’ve outfitted my home gym with a new yoga mat, incline bench, mini trampoline, set of free weights, jump rope plus battle ropes. I have almost everything I need to target all of my odd muscles, elevate my heart rate plus work up a healthy sweat. I focus on my stamina, flexibility, balance, strength training plus calorie burn. I properly spend 2 hours per day on my fitness routine. My only complaint with the space is the lack of temperature control. Because of the open screens, there is no way to incorporate heating or cooling into the lanai. There are a couple months right in the middle of winter season when the outside temperature drops into the forties. I wait until the late afternoon to workout, hoping to take luck of the highest temperature. I need to dress in heavy layers plus I run a space heater. It still is sometimes impossible to adequately work out my muscles. It’s hard to get motivated plus I worry about injury. There are also a couple of months when the heat plus humidity of the summer are brutal. I exercise as early in the morning as I can, hoping to avoid the heat of the afternoon. I run an electric fan at the highest speed plus rest directly in front of it yet I am still dripping sweat before completing my warmup.

Physical Training Programs

A bad injury prevents me from working out

I devote approximately 2 hours per day to toiling out.

My exercise sessions include a diversity of activities, including walking, jumping rope, running, cycling, abdominal crunches, lunges, squats plus weight-lifting.

I rarely skip any days. Whether I’m weary, stressed or suffering from aching muscles, I take time out of my day to focus on my physical fitness. I have worked out when I’ve had a fever, a headache or felt congested. Due to a hectic work schedule, I’ve completed workouts before the sunshine is up plus well after the sunshine is gone, because I make fitness a priority, I feel strong plus healthy. I sometimes push my limits beyond what is safe or healthy. Last summer, I decided to renovate one of the rooms in the house. I tore out the ancient plaster plus lath walls plus ceilings plus took the room down to the bare plywood. I installed up-to-date windows, up-to-date wiring plus added fresh insulation. I then began installing up-to-date drywall on the ceiling. I am a man in my mid-40s, right around five feet tall plus about 120 pounds. Handling the bulky, heavy sheets of drywall is rather hard for me, but although I cut the sheets in half, hauling them up the ladder plus screwing them into the ceiling was a challenge. I needed to use the top of my head plus my left hand to hold the drywall sheet in place while I operated the cordless drill with my right hand. The job was painful even though I refused to stop. That night, I was in such bad pain that I could only lie completely flat on the couch. I eventually sussed out that I’d torn my trapezius muscle. The upper left side of my back swelled plus turned red! For the next three weeks, I couldn’t get off the couch. I was unable to leave the home or scrub my own hair. There was no option for toiling out. When I could finally transfer around again, I was limited to riding the stationary bike with zero resistance. I could only ride for fifteen minutes.

Getting into jumping rope as a lifestyle

It tracks my number of workouts, calories burned plus the total time devoted

I have become obsessed with jumping rope. It was an interest that I certainly loved plus was quite fantastic at when I was a small child. However, I got away from it for several years. I am typically on the lookout for new and up-to-date ways to workout plus improve my strength plus stamina. I study blogs and vlogs, plus watch exercise videos provided by professional athletes. Many of them recommend trying to jump rope as a full-body workout. I purchased a leather jump rope set with weighted handles plus began practicing. Initially, I struggled. I kept whacking myself in the legs or stepping on the ropes; Despite incorporating a lot of running, cycling, jumping jacks plus burpees into my usual training sessions, I lacked the endurance to jump for more than a minute. I gradually improved plus began incorporating harder skills into my jumping routine. I learned how to complete crossovers, double-jumps, jumping jacks, high knees plus jumping on one foot. I wore out three odd leather ropes. I finally did some additional research plus invested into a better system that includes a single set of handles that link to four odd weights of ropes. The ropes were designed from a synthetic material that doesn’t knot, tangle or tear. The metal clasps all link to the handles allow me to switch ropes suddenly plus easily, and plus, the ropes can rotate more smoothly plus abruptly; Each weight of rope provides a unique and identifiable style of workout. The jump rope system partners with a free app on my phone. The phone app offers guided workouts of varying difficulty plus lengths. It tracks my number of workouts, calories burned plus the total time devoted. I jump rope just about every day.

I am not often motivated to workout

Every day, I try to work out first thing in the morning! I am committed to my physical fitness, health plus my overall well-being.

  • I know that keeping myself in shape requires dedication plus work.

I feel that I benefit from my efforts by feeling energized, maintaining a respected weight plus avoiding major health concerns, however while my peers have undergone many cosmetic surgeries plus are required to take a variety of prescription medications, I strictly see my doctor for an annual check-up plus take nothing but natural vitamins. I’ve noticed that too many of my friends have slowed down plus been forced to supply up hobbies they enjoy. I still take my skiff out on the lake, ride my bike, hike, play tennis plus tackle home improvement projects. I cherish being able to garden, travel plus play with my grand babies… However, I am not typically eager to exercise; There are nights of insomnia that result in my feeling very tired in the morning. I sometimes wake up with headaches, stiff joints or sore muscles. There are some stressed afternoons when I can’t find enough time in my schedule to accomplish everything! No matter the excuses, I can never skip my workout. I know how easy it would be to fall out of the habit! My exercise sessions are my priority. Not every workout is satisfying or maximizes potential benefits. I can sometimes bring out the uplifting music to get myself motivated. I can frequently get inspired by following along with a great workout video or an exercise app on my phone. Now plus then I go for an absolutely slow run or devote a lot of time to my warm up, stretching plus the cool down. However, the vast majority of workouts are rewarding. I get my heart pumping, work my lungs plus manage to get myself sweaty plus out of breath. I push myself to be stronger, faster plus have greater stamina.

My sibling got outdoor deck upgrades

My sibling Zed lives in the most beautiful part of the country, plus I am always envious of him.

  • Zed managed from a young age to learn a lot about remote work.

And Zed has worked for several companies as a remote content writer, virtual assistance, plus a digital advertising expert. Zed has never been a fan of the 9 to 5 job, plus prefers toiling in remote positions. This is how Zed managed to travel to several locations across the world. I am an RN, plus I had to toil in a local hospital for a long time. But, I am now training to get my travel RN license after Zed offered me that idea last year. Back to him, Zed recently purchased a lake house plus it’s in the most beautiful location I have ever seen. I went to see Zed last month, plus he was having a deck supplier install a modern deck in his backyard. The front yard already had a very nice deck, however Zed is extra. He also felt he wanted a deck at the back, plus hired the deck supplier to take care of it. I was there when the deck team came to do the job. The outdoor deck upgrade took a few days, plus I must disclose it was a truly excellent addition as well. Now, my sibling Zed is talking about hiring a roofing supplier soon to update his roof. It’s not worn out or anything, even though Zed is slowly toiling on improving the value of the lake house. A roof updatement will be a good step in this direction for sure.
